Pregnancy Introduction

Pregnancy can be defined as to carry one or more offspring, known an embryo or a fetus inside the body of a female. In pregnancy, there can be multiple gestations (for instance, in the case of twins, triplets or more). The pregnancy is the result of successful copulation in which, a female egg (oocyte) joins with a spermatozoon in a process that is referred as ‘fertilization’. In normal words, we call it as conception. Fertilization is generally occurred through the act of sexual intercourse or coitus. However, the advent of artificial insemination is made possible with advancement of medical science’s latest technologies.

Period of pregnancy

Traditionally the human pregnancy lasts approximately 36-40 weeks from the LMP – last menstrual period. In the more familiar Gregorian calendar, the 40 weeks dating from the last menstrual period is equivalent to a bit more than nine months and six days and this forms the base of Naegele’s rule of approximating the expected delivery date (EDD).

Babies born before the 37th week are marked as considered premature and babies born after 43rd week are labeled as postmature. The babies born premature generally require immediate medical emergency treatment.

Pregnancy tests

The pregnancy can be detected after few weeks once a woman conceives. The HPT – home pregnancy test is simple to perform and probably that is why most famous among pregnant women. The pregnancy detecting strip is OTC – over the counter product and does not require the doctor’s prescription. The strip is hold in the stream of urine and if a woman is pregnant, the strip will show a colored band or else it would remain blank.

There are many blood tests for pregnancy those are to be performed in laboratory and blood as a sample is required. However, after couple of months, the protruding abdomen will speak all!

Pregnancy trimesters

For the better understanding, the entire period of the pregnancy is divided into three trimesters. Each trimester, as the name suggest, contains three months. Total three trimesters and each trimester containing three months make nine months in total.

Each trimester has its own importance and development of the fetus and mother continuously grow. In each trimester, a woman should take care of herself and her baby. Frequent visits to gynecologist would be helpful and ultrasound examination would be done as and when required to know about the progress of the pregnancy.

Nutrition in pregnancy

A woman is carrying a new and an additional life in her body and therefore, it is obvious that she will be requiring more calories and more energy. The additional supplement is to be supplied. Some vitamins, iron and protein powder or pills are supplied regularly to meet the body requirement.

Delivery of baby

If the baby is delivered without any surgery, it is called as ‘normal’ or ‘vaginal’ delivery and if it requires the operation, it is termed as ‘cesarean’ delivery. Cesarean delivery needs more care after the baby is delivered as there will be stitches and there are chances to get infection or the stitches to be loosen.
