Leucorrhea Leucorrhea or Leucorrhoea is nothing but the vaginal discharge in women. A woman faces this major universal problem at least once in her life. Most of these secretions are regarding the lifestyle and physiological warranting no medical interventions. However, leucorrhea with blood, profuse or foul smell or with changes in its color may seek immediate medical assistance. Generally, leucorrhea secretions are slimy little bit sticky. You can compare it roughly (but not exactly) with kind of nasal secretions. Normally the quantities of vaginal secretions differ throughout the menstrual cycle, reaching its peak at ovulation and also increasing when a woman is emotionally stressful. Recent researches have shown that secretions from the uterus and upper part of the vagina may also go down and they are again reabsorbed in the lower part of the vagina. This flow is continuous and it is a normal physiological process in every normal woman. The whitish discharge is generally caused if the tract is infected or any tissues or cells are infected. The condition may continue for couple of weeks or months in some bad cases. Causes of Leucorrhea Leucorrhea generally shows symptoms in association with many other conditions or illnesses. There are many reasons those are encountered in giving raise to condition like leucorrhea. Common causes include fungal, bacterial and parasitic infections. Sexually transmitted diseases also come under prime causative factors. In adolescent girls, leucorrhea can occur during the few years before and after the beginning of the menstrual flow (menarche). It could be due to new irritation in the genital track caused by various factors like dirt, soiled under garments, intestinal worms, masturbation or stimulation of the sexual desire. In some girls, leucorrhea can occur during inter-menstrual periods because of over activities in the sex glands and organs. In women, it may occur due to thickening of the mucus membrane in the reproductive organs. Symptoms of Leucorrhea Whitish discharge is first and foremost symptom in leucorrhea. Apart from the discharge, certain other conditions develop during this trouble. Woman may feel week and tired. She may also suffer from the pain in lumbar region and calves. There can be dragging sensation in the abdomen. Other symptoms include constipation, frequent headaches and irritation in the vaginal tract with itching. In worse cases, a woman will feel irritable and may develop black patches under her eyes. The mood changes and there would be less desire of sexual activities. Treatment for Leucorrhea The treatment is according to the cause that caused the condition. In case of infection, the condition is treated with antibiotics. Local hygiene is extremely important in any leucorrhea. The sexual activities needed to be stopped till the condition is fully cured. If it has bleeding or blood stains or the color has been changed, ultrasound examination may be required to know the exact underlying cause. Many times Yoga like Padmasana, Sarvangasana, Paschimottasana is useful treating the condition. In Ayurveda, it is termed as ‘pradara’. There are certain Ayurvedic herbs like ashoka, lodra, patola, nimba that can help curing the disease. You can go for either single drug therapy or can use formula containing various herbs.
